Moving into an assisted living community is a huge transition in anyone’s life. It can be an emotional period for close family members and friends as well. Chances are you might be feeling overwhelmed with all the packing and preparations that you will have to do.
It would be easier if you are well-informed about what basic amenities are provided in your assisted living community. Read on to find out what should be on your moving checklist.
Homewares and Kitchen Appliances
First, you will have to consider the appliances you will be utilizing daily. These include a mini-fridge to keep your leftovers, microwave, pots and pans to heat your food, plates, bowls, glasses, and utensils for your everyday use. Some other essentials you could consider would be a coffee maker, towels for the kitchen and the bathroom, trash cans for the living room and kitchen, and clothes hangers.
Bedroom Furniture
The bedroom is one of the most intimate parts of the space. You might want to consider bringing some familiar items from your home so you would feel more comfortable in your new living environment. This could take the form of your bed linens, a nightstand, your personal dresser, and even your favorite comfortable couch that you used to relax on daily.
Cleaning Tools and Supplies
For hygiene and cleanliness purposes, you will want to consider bringing basic cleaning supplies for daily housekeeping. These should include dish soap to wash your cutleries, anti-bacterial kitchen and bath cleaner, general surface wipes to clean up any spills or messes, dusting cloths, and detergent if you’d prefer to do your own laundry.
Personal Valuables
This would be the most important part of the checklist you would have to consider during your preparation. This would include bringing your essentials like clothes, toiletries, medication, and personal valuables.
For daily wear, you should aim to prepare and pack at least half a month’s supplies of socks, undergarments, bathrobes, bath suits, and casualwear for socializing in the community. For social occasions, prepare some formal outfits and for the cooler weather, pack some layering apparel like sweaters and jackets.
You should also prepare toiletries to maintain your own hygiene. These should include essentials like face wash, toothbrush and toothpaste, shampoo body soap, shaving cream, skin care lotions, and a comb or a brush for your personal grooming. Most importantly, you will need to bring your own medications for any medical conditions you have.
Entertainment and Hobbies
While there are many daily programs planned for you by your assisted living community, you should consider bringing items to keep yourself entertained. These could include books to read, mementos, photo albums, digital devices like laptops or tablets, and personal hobby supplies like yarns for crocheting.
