Military Heritage Museum
The Military Heritage Museum initially started opening visits from the public in Fishermen’s Village in Punta Gorda, Florida, on Pearl Harbor Day 2001. The purpose of the Museum — now and then — was to honor veterans from branches or eras of U.S. military service or to assist the public in appreciating the diverse contributions of American service members with original artifacts or stories.
Since its founding, many veterans and veteran groups have avidly supported the Museum. They donated artifacts or funding; assisted in forming display cases, painting walls, or laying carpet; or volunteered as docents.
Retired Air Force Brigadier General Paul Warfield Tibbets, Junior., the famed pilot of the “Enola Gay,” the plane which dropped the first atomic bomb upon Japan, consented to work as the Museum’s initial honorary chairman, a post he took until 2007. At this stage, Sean O’Keefe, a former Secretary of the Navy or former NASA Administrator, assumed the role and persists in serving until now.
Within six years of the large-scale opening, the Museum collected artifacts, financial support, following in the community or yearly visitors that now came from all 50 states and abroad. This prompted a move in 2007 to a bigger space in Fishermen’s Village that could contain the expansion. This was the Museum’s initial major transformation into a more professional museum.
In 2013, the Museum expanded further, expanding the space on the second floor above the exhibits to offer a conference center (accessible for rent), a military research library, administrative centers, and storage.
Upon the Military Heritage Museum growing in appeal, it established a name with tourists and the local community as Southwest Florida’s best-reputed museum due primarily to its warm aura. Veterans lead field tours or offer visitors a distinctive perspective or impression of significant history points that are not accessible with a textbook.
Charlotte County Historical and Genealogical Society
Its mission is to educate and assist members and the community in Virginia with their search for historical and genealogical records.
