Making the Move with Your Best Friend
Pet policies may vary from senior living community to community, but there are some basics involved. As an example of one community’s set of rules and restrictions, your pet can live with you as long as it:
- Is not likely to upset other residents, jump on them, is not aggressive, and is well behaved
- Is litter trained or housetrained
- Is, if required, licensed by the county, state, etc.
- Has regular licensed veterinarian exams and is current with all vaccinations
- Is what would ordinarily be viewed as a “domestic pet”, like a cat or dog. So that you know whether or not your specific pet meets the community’s standards, check with the manager
Additional Stipulations
As long as you can provide complete care for your pet, they would be able to live with you as long as they qualify per the above-stated regulations. Caring for your pet means you can give them any medications they need, you can take them for walks (for exercise and potty needs), you can feed them, etc.
As long as you avoid dining areas and food preparation areas, you may be able to walk your pet around the inside of the community, as well. Once you have read and agree to the pet policies of a community, you may, additionally, be asked to put up a nonrefundable fee. Your pet will need to be on a leash and have a proper ID and collar any time they leave your apartment.
