Glaucoma is a term referring to a group of eye diseases that is often associated with partial or (in worst case situations) full vision loss. In this article, we cover everything you need to know about glaucoma as well as a few tips to better manage it.
What is Glaucoma?
Glaucoma is a serious condition that threatens your vision and whose effects are typically unreversible. There are several different types of glaucoma. The two most common are open-angle glaucoma and closed-angle glaucoma.
Open-angle Glaucoma
Open-angle glaucoma is more frequently occurring, and it develops at a relatively slow pace. Usually, there is no pain associated with open-angle glaucoma, and vision deteriorates slowly. One usually experiences peripheral vision loss followed by their central vision. Blindness may occur if not treated.
Close-angle Glaucoma
Close-angle glaucoma is less common, and it may happen either gradually or suddenly. Unlike open-angle glaucoma, there may be sudden pains, redness of the eye, and nausea. Vision loss can occur unexpectedly.
The causes of glaucoma are varied and can defer from person to person. Typically, some warning signs are ocular hypertension and genetics. Ocular hypertension refers to the pressure of the eye and is associated with increased blood pressure. Although there is no cure for glaucoma, there are some strategies you can adopt to prevent your condition from worsening.
Exercise
Amongst the best things you can do to reduce ocular hypertension is regular exercise. By exercising regularly, you keep your body fit and healthy, which reduces blood pressure levels and eye pressure.
Exercise benefits last for as long as you continue to exercise, which is why it is recommended to exercise moderately on a regular basis. There are many benefits to yoga, however, make sure you avoid inverted positions such as headstands and shoulder stands, since these may increase Intraocular Pressure (IOP).
Healthy Eating Habits
Another variable associated with increased eye pressure is increased insulin levels. By eating healthily and avoiding foods rich in sugars, you can reduce spikes in insulin that may contribute to a worsening of your loved one’s condition. Eating whole foods rather than processed foods also promotes healthy blood pressure as the high levels of sodium found in unhealthy processed food can lead to the development of high blood pressure.
Wear the Correct Eyewear
Wearing the right eyewear which is specifically designed to treat any issues your eyes may have may help to reduce any strain on your eyes and reduce the likelihood of the deterioration of any other eye conditions that may further complicate the management of your glaucoma. Going for regular eye checks at a trusted optometrist can also help you spot any trends in your eye health so that you can make the necessary adjustments accordingly.
